Darebin Community Sports StadiumHome | New to Golf
Golf is a daunting sport.
Even when you’re a seasoned pro, stepping up to that first tee box can be a nerve-wracking experience. But all of us feel this way, so if you’re new to golf, you should feel liberated that even the people who have played the longest still find the nerves difficult to overcome.
Golf is for everyone – especially at Bundoora Public Golf Course & Northcote Public Golf Course – and we want to help you get involved in this wonderful game.
If you’re new to golf, a Beginner lesson or clinics are a great place to start.
You’ll learn the fundamentals in a relaxed, supportive environment, build confidence to practice on your own, and connect with others who are just getting started too – you might even find your new golf crew along the way.
You can also explore our private lessons, or join one of our group programs and clinics to keep building your skills.
If you’ve played before but it’s been a while, a private lesson is a great way to get back into the swing of things. Our coaches will help you refine your technique and build confidence, so you can practise safely and enjoy your time on the course.
Once you’ve got the basics, the best thing you can do is keep practising. Like any skill, confidence comes with consistency – the more you play, the more it sticks.
Driving Range
Bundoora Park has a driving range that is open daily and easy to access. Clubs are also available to hire if you need them.
If you’re just starting out, our team is always happy to help.
Chat to us about the different clubs and we’ll point you in the right direction so you can get the most out of your session.
Putting & Chipping Greens
Our putting and chipping greens are available to use whenever the venue is open. If you’ve got your own balls, you’re good to go – no bookings required.
Short game skills like putting and chipping are just as important as your long shots, and a great way to build confidence as you learn.
If you need equipment, we’ve got you covered. We stock a range of golf balls to suit all levels – just let us know you’re getting started and we’ll help you choose what’s right for you.
Give it a go
There’s no such thing as being “not ready” – the best way to learn is to get out there and have a go. Take the pressure off, keep it light, and focus on enjoying the experience.
Settle in at your own pace
If you’re feeling a bit unsure, start with a more relaxed session later in the day. It’s a great way to ease in, play a few holes, and build your confidence without rushing.
Keep it simple
Don’t worry too much about the rules when you’re starting out – this is your time to get a feel for the game. Try things out, have a laugh, and enjoy being out on the course.
Keep learning as you go
After a few rounds (and a few encounters with the trees – it happens to everyone), it can help to revisit a lesson.
Brushing up on the basics will make a big difference to your confidence and help you keep improving.
Lessons can be flexible to suit you – short or longer sessions, in a group or one-on-one, depending on your schedule and budget.
We’re here to help
If you have questions, just ask. Our team is here to support you and help you get the most out of your time on course.
For lessons and to play a round of golf, yes, bookings are highly recommended. We do accept walk-ins but we can get pretty busy, so always best to book to guarantee yourself a game.
Bookings are not required for our putting & chipping greens.
Nope! Northcote and Bundoora are public golf courses so absolutely anyone can play, 7 days a week!
No collar, no worries! Just go with something comfortable you can move in, like sports or leisure wear.
We do ask for enclosed shoes and a t-shirt.
On warmer days, remember to stay sun smart with a hat and some coverage.
Once you arrive head into the Golf Shop building. This should always be your first stop.
This is where you’ll pay for the driving range, lesson, or round of golf and it’s where you’ll find our team to ask any questions.
From there, we’ll let you know how to get your hire balls, find your coach, or get to your first tee.
To get started, you’ll just need a few essentials – a couple of clubs, some golf balls, and a glove (ideally) to help keep your hand comfortable.
When you’re out on the course, each player will need their own set of clubs so everyone can keep moving at a steady pace.
If you don’t have your own gear yet, that’s absolutely fine! You can hire clubs from the Golf Shop, and we’ve got balls and gloves available too.
Not sure what’s right for you?
Just ask our team – we’re always here to help and happy to guide you through the basics so you can feel confident getting started.
We’ve brought our golf and leisure sites together under one roof. We created this new online destination to give you a modern, seamless experience—making it faster and easier to find what you need, book facilities, and stay updated.
